OPILAS EVELYN AGULLANA OPILAS

Highschool 1966 | College 1970

Evelyn belonged to the first batch of college students who completed a four-year course at STCQC in 1970. She majored in journalism and was active in national student press issues. She worked at the Philippine Press Institute and Press Foundation of Asia, and contributed articles to various publications. She trained at the UN Asian Institute for Economic Development and Planning in Bangkok and at the International Institute for Journalism in Berlin (first female course topnotcher). She migrated to Australia in 1987 with son John Paul Opilas Amansec (her granddaughter Heléna Juliet’s dad). She joined the NSW public service as editor of electricity supply and education sector publications. Her credentials and experience include employment services and first aid training. She studied at the University of Technology, Sydney (MA in Journalism) and participated in the pilot Public Sector Management Course for Women under the NSW Premier’s Department. She coordinated Filipino-motif displays at Parramatta City Council public library for 15 years. She received the Teresa’s Achievement Award for Media in 2021, Ilocano Association of Australia’s Inaugural Award for Journalism in 2015, and was a finalist in the 2020 Australia Day Citizen of the Year Awards of Blacktown City Council. She compiled-edited-published Akin views—Filipino proverbs and almost parallel quotes, Genuine Ilocano views—Ilocano proverbs and almost parallel quotes, and A Filipina Collection of COVID-19 Essays, and co-edited the travel anthology, Voyagers: Travels with Bessie. She advocates for the rights of the unborn child.
